This album is scheduled to be released next November 2007. Wyclef has declared that he considers this collaboration with Paul as a dream come true. RUMOURS ABOUT S&G TOUR IN AUSTRALIA

Maybe a new world tour to promote “Live in 1969” album

According to a news appeared last July 18 in Herald Sun paper some promoters have contacted to S&G in order to take them to tour Australia in 2008. Dates have been tentatively locked in for early next year, with two rival promoters now bidding. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reportedly demanded $1.1 million between them for each show. The new tour would follow the release of a vintage concert recording, Live 1969. It is unknown if it would become a world tour.

S&G ALBUM “LIVE IN 1969” POSTPONED AGAIN

After one year of delays for its release everything was prepared to release the new S&G live album this September, however it has been postponed again without date, though still supposed to take place in this year. Maybe this new delay has been planned to release it next to Christmas sales and next to the possible new 2008 S&G tour, maybe designed to promote this album.

New design of home page

As most you have already noticed from about 1 month ago we have made a new design for the home page of this site, including a small video spanning Paul Simon’s career whose soundtrack is music guitars of “Another Galaxy” with vocals removed.

PAUL TO SPEND SUMMER ON A NEW SONG

According to two posts by Ears and Cathy in alt.music.paul-simon Paul Simon has said that “he hasn't written for the last two years but has just started again and has the roots of a new song forming.  He said he plans on taking it easy this summer and writing. He also said he doesn't really see a whole album/CD eventually coming out of  it, *but* that he does enjoy performing, & likes to be able to tweak already-written songs - giving them fresh sounds, for performances.”

PAUL SIMON IN THE BASEBALL

This Week In Baseball is essentially a weekly baseball highlights show. TWIB sometimes features little segments on baseball players who also play music; last June 29 they changed it around to a musician who likes baseball. Paul talked about going to a Yankees game as a child with his father and seeing Joe DiMaggio hit a home run. They played some of the "Me and Julio" video with Mickey Mantle and Paul said that he "treasured" a framed picture of Mickey laughing with him. I thought it would be a one or maybe two minute segment but I think it was closer to 8 minutes.

SIMON IN CHARLIE ROSE

After being delayed finally last June 28 it was aired a long and interesting interview to Paul Simon on Charlie Rose US TV program, where he promoted his new compilation Essential and talked long and deep about his work and career, touching on the creative process, science, the state of the music business (it no longer thrives), the Gershwin Prize and Paul Simon’s plans for future recordings. Here is a link to the video of that interview:

TWO NEW BOOKS ABOUT S&G AND PAUL SIMON

Scheduled To Be Released Next October

Simon And Garfunkel's Bookends (Rock Of Ages)

Pete Fornatale

Rondale Books

USA, October 2007

160 pages

Joining Rodale’s series on the greatest works of the rock era is this fresh look at Bookends, which many consider Simon and Garfunkel’s best album—and at the stormy relationship the duo have shared through the decades. Bookends is vintage Simon and Garfunkel, featuring such hit singles as “A Hazy Shade Of Winter,” “Fakin’ It,” and “Mrs. Robinson,” the classic from the Graduate soundtrack that soared to the top of the charts.

The timing of the album’s release lent gravitas to the major themes and lyrics, and classic rock radio legend Pete Fornatale examines the impact of the music and the enormous popularity of Simon and Garfunkel as performers in this new installment in the Rock of Ages series.

Writing from on-hand experience with the band and extensive, exclusive one-on-one sit-downs with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, Fornatale reveals never-before-disclosed details of the love-hate partnership between the two musicians and a unique perspective on each of them as individuals—from Garfunkel’s movie career and late-in-life arrests for marijuana possession to Simon’s stubborn, egotistical moods and wildly varied career choices. Bookends marked a critical juncture in their relationship as the wear and tear of a 10-year professional partnership began to take its toll just as the band was reaching its creative peak. Fornatale’s insights in Bookends will entertain, captivate, and surely surprise even the most dedicated Simon and Garfunkel fans.

The Words And Music Of Paul Simon

James Bennighof

Publisher: Praeger Publishers

October 30, 2007

After providing a brief biographical overview, this work will examine Simon's songwriting work in depth, providing a critical discussion of each song as a fusion of text and music so as to help the reader to identify elements that enhance appreciation. A particularly valuable contribution in this context is the discussion of the wide variety of musical elements that contribute significantly to the value of Simon's work. These include such easily-understandable issues as verse-chorus structure, melodic variation, selection of particular instruments and even performers, variation of musical style within a song, general harmonic characteristics, relationships among keys, rhythm and pacing of text, etc. While the book proceeds chronologically through Simon's recorded output, specific threads are developed throughout, and the discussion of individual songs takes place in the context of these threads, both drawing on them and developing them further. The diversity of Paul Simon's work reflects his very American background, and no discussion of American music is complete without accounting for his influence.

About the Author

JAMES BENNIGHOF is Professor of Music Theory and Vice Provost for Academic Administration at Baylor University. He has presented numerous articles and papers in leading scholarly journals and conferences on music theory and analysis, including studies of American vernacular music by Scott Joplin, Robert Johnson, Artie Matthews, Janis Joplin, and Paul Simon. He has also composed both text and music for some three-dozen choral works, several of which are published by Oxford University Press.

PAUL SIMON SIGNS ON TO HELP CHRIS DODD'S PRESIDENTIAL BID

DES MOINES, Iowa -- June 21, 2007. Singer Paul Simon hopes to keep Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd's presidential hopes from slip-sliding away. Simon, half of the popular 1960s duo Simon and Garfunkel, will join Dodd for two days of a bus tour that the Connecticut senator is making across Iowa July 3-7. Simon will take part in stops in northern and western Iowa.

"Simon and Dodd have been close friends for many years and Simon has been a longtime Dodd supporter," said Taylor West, a spokeswoman for Dodd's Iowa campaign. Simon grew up in New York City but now lives in Connecticut. He'll join the senator as Dodd is registering in the low single digits in Iowa polls.

Paul Simon: a Chris Dodd Roadie, by Mary Ann Akers. The Washington Post. May 24, 2007

No question who America's new national treasure, Paul Simon, is supporting for president. The most conspicuous V.I.P. audience member at last night's three-hour concert at which Simon was awarded the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song was Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.).

Mid-way through the show at the Warner Theater, Dodd and his wife, would-be first lady Jackie Clegg Dodd, were summoned down to the "Queen's Box" to sit with Simon's dear old friend and neighbor, Lorne Michaels, creator of "Saturday Night Live." From there, they watched Simon welcome his "dear friend and partner in arguments," Art Garfunkel (whose hair only gets crazier with time), on stage to sing - what else? - a tear-inducing (no matter your generation or its aversion to the nails-on-chalkboard sound of folk music) rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It was - hear us now, make fun of us later - a beautiful thing. (The incredible line-up included performances by Lyle Lovett, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Shawn Colvin and Stevie Wonder, among others.)

Dodd, it turns out, is a big fan and old pal of Simon, as we learned at the after-party at the uber Euro-shwanky Mandarin Oriental hotel. (We crashed the party, and no one seemed to mind).

Somehow, we were welcomed into the V.I.P. section, where Simon told the Sleuth, "I love Chris Dodd. I did a fundraiser for him in March." And Dodd, who stayed out past 1:00 a.m., told us that Simon will be his roadie in Iowa and New Hampshire. "If he wants me to, I'm there," Simon confirmed. Simon and Dodd were hanging out with Michaels and TV sports god Bob Costas, who emceed some of the evening - most notably a tribute to Simon's "Mrs. Robinson," which of course immortalized Joltin' Joe DiMaggio. Simon, Dodd and Michaels talked about the time they all went to Czechoslovakia for the inauguration of  Vaklav Havel. (Simon said they were "observers.")

Costas at one point declared to Michaels that if Al Gore had only gone on "Saturday Night Live," he'd be "the freaking president right now!" Simon and Michaels talked about being neighbors. And poet Billy Collins, a two-term former poet laureate, remarked that his neighbor is Lou Reed. "What am I going to say to him - 'Hi, Lou, may I borrow a cup of heroin?'" Collins said.

The night ended in the V.I.P. room around 1:30 a.m. with Simon, 65, looking a little tired. He told us he'd better go get some sleep because his youngest son had a little league baseball game scheduled for today.

And Simon is the coach of his son's team.

NEW SIMON & GARFUNKEL LIVE CD

Live 1969

Sony Legacy has announced the forthcoming release of a new live S&G CD named “Live 1969”. First its release was scheduled for last February, later postponed for May 8, and now it has been postponed again.

SIMON MAKES A “SALSA” RENDITION OF “LATE IN THE EVENING”

Paul has collaborated on forthcoming Spanish Harlem Orchestra album named “United We Swing”. He appears on track 13 doing a salsa rendition of his 1980 hit “Late In The Evening”. The album release is scheduled for May 25, though before it, last may 16, it was presented at SOB’s New York

Oscar Hernandez, the leader of Spanish Harlem Orchestra, was the music director of Simon’s Broadway musical “The Capeman”.

PAUL SIMON HONORED WITH 1ST GERSHWIN PRICE BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

Simon has become the first recipient of the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, named in honor of George and Ira Gershwin. As the Mark Twain Prize has done for American humor, the annual Gershwin Prize will honor an American composer or performer "whose lifetime contributions exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins," the library says. The same producers who originated the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for Humor in 1998 have been working to establish a popular-music corollary since 2000.

Last May 22 Simon received the prize in an invitation-only ceremony in the library's Great Hall, followed by a gala concert Wednesday 23 at the Warner Theatre. There Paul took the stage with Stevie Wonder for a duet of Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. And Ladysmith Black Mambazo returned to join him on Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes. Upon finishing, Simon told the crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you." Many hollered back, "Thank you," which was met with cheers. Simon introduced "my dear friend" Art Garfunkel, greeting him with a hug, and the two sang their 1970 hits Bridge Over Troubled Water and Cecilia. For a finale, Wonder and Simon did Loves Me Like a Rock backed by the gospel group the Dixie Hummingbirds, who performed on the 1973 recording. Before Simon's appearance, the most raucous reception was earned by Lovett and Buckwheat Zydeco in their rousing performance of the Cajun-flavored That Was Your Mother. Other highlights: James Taylor's subtle version of Still Crazy After All These Years, Marc Anthony's hip-shaking delivery of Late in the Evening, Krauss' return to the stage to singGracelandand Simon on his own tender Father and Daughter, from the movie The Wild Thornberrys. A backing band performed below an artificial facade of the Library of Congress. Video highlights ran throughout the night, including a collection of Saturday Night Liveclips introduced by creator (and Simon pal and neighbor) Lorne Michaels. One showed Simon singing Still Crazy After All These Years in a turkey costume.

Librarian of Congress James Billington presented the award to Simon at a Tuesday dinner. At the same time, the 12-time Grammy winner announced plans to add his song notes for Graceland to the library, joining original manuscripts by Leonard Bernstein, John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland, and Ira and George Gershwin, for whom the award is named.

According to James H. Billington, the librarian of Congress, "Paul Simon's contribution has been very special and deserving of recognition, as indicated by the quality of people coming to this event. . . . As our first designee, we made it clear that real musical craftmanship is involved, as well as a lifetime of achievement, continued growth and diversification."

The Library of Congress will receive the extensive works-in-progress archives Simon has been keeping since he began "Graceland," written notes on yellow legal pads tracing how songs were made lyrically and CDs "of every little phase of a recording that typically starts with a drum pattern, or three or four, then edits and evolution and additions," he explains. "It may go on for months before you start to hear a vocal come down, and by the time you complete the process, you can hear every little nuance of what I decided to change in phrasing. It's pretty interesting to be able to document it so effortlessly."

The three-hour concert from the Warner Theatre will be edited down for a 90-minute PBS special to air June 27 by PBS.

PAUL SIMON SPECIAL ON BBC RADIO 2

Mr Simon’s Big Trip

On June 5 UK BBC Radio 2 will air a special about Paul Simon’s time in the UK during the early 60´s, named “Mr Simon’s Big Trip” which uncovers the real story of Paul Simon’s British residency, and the part it played in his creative formation.

For years, people have been fascinated by the ´missing´ 13 months in the life and career of Paul Simon preceding the rise to success in America of Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon spent what is probably one of the most famous ´gap´ years in music history travelling around England, writing songs, playing tiny folk club venues and meeting future legends of the folk scene, including Bert Jansch and Martin Carthy. Homeward Bound was famously penned on Widnes Station, and many of his most famous lyrics can be traced to British roots.

The programme includes interviews with Martin Carthy, Brian Protheroe, Al Stewart and many more and features a hitherto unheard Paul Simon song, The Northern Line, recorded in an Exeter folk club in 1965.

The BBC Radio 2 60s Season marks the anniversary of the ´Summer of Love´ and the network´s 40th birthday in September. BBC Radio 2 takes listeners on a magical mystery tour of the Sixties with a season of summer programming celebrating the music and culture of this influential decade.

PAUL SHOW IN ITALY NEXT JULY

It is confirmed that Paul Simon will perform next July 13 at Parco della Musica in Rome (Italy). Some rumours point out that also Montreux Jazz Fest have contacted with Simon to perform there in July. And some more rumours about a possible European Tour next summer, but nothing confirmed, except Rome show.

SIMON IN WE ARE FAMILY FOUNDATION

Last April 24 Paul Simon accepted an award from the We Are Family Foundation which was started in September 2001 by Nile Rodgers, the famous music producer and leader of Chic, and Nancy Hunt. Since then, they have raised millions of dollars and built schools in South Africa and South America. It´s pretty impressive stuff. Last night, they raised more than $1 million. Of course, the annual fundraiser is all about music.

Nile Rodgers played guitars on Simon’s track Think Too Much (a) from H&B album.

Paul Simon stole the show with renditions of "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," "Late In The Evening" and "You Can Call Me Al." He was backed by his own band plus Rodgers and Chic.

POSSIBLE GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR “SURPRISE” ALBUM!!!

Paul Simon’s “Surprise” album will be one of the nominated for Best Album of the Year on next Grammy Awards.

Acoording to Roger Friedman from FOX News, members of the Recording Academy must have their preliminary ballots all voted and back in by Thursday for this year's Grammy Awards. And then things get interesting.

The Best Album nominations are certain to include Gnarls Barkley's hit CD, "St. Elsewhere," and that album's single, "Crazy," is destined for the Best Record category. But beyond that, what?

The four other Best Album nominees could be Paul Simon's "Surprise," which actually was the best recording this year — although that doesn't really guarantee it anything in this age of diminished standards.

The three remaining slots could go to a variety of different offerings, including obvious but not definite choices like Bob Dylan's "Modern Times," the Dixie Chicks' "Taking the Long Way" and James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam." Expect Blunt to clean up at this year's awards, with nominations for Best New Artist, Best Song and Record for "You're Beautiful," in addition to Best Album. There's also Bruce Springsteen's "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions," which will be taken very seriously by voters.

THE ISLANDS TOUR

The forgotten “continental shelf”

It seems there will NOT be a “Surprise Tour” all over Europe. Paul Simon has decided to avoid the European continent and he will only tour on the islands (UK & Ireland).

The reasons maybe come from his wish of not to be away from his family too long, so Simon has decided to focus his European leg on UK, where his new album has got the best European sales by far, getting a Gold Disc.

The “islands mini-tour” venues are:

November 3, 2006. Glasgow, Scotland. SE & CC

November 4, 2006. Manchester, UK. M.E.N. Arena

November 6, 2006. Bournemouth, UK. BIC

November 8, 2006. Dublin, Ireland. The Point

PAUL SIMON & EDIE BRICKEL BENEFIT CONCERT

Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell performed together last  August 26 at Music Hall, Fair Park, Texas, trying to raise money for Edie’s childhood friend Robert C. Meadows, 43, a Dallas actor who suffered severe brain injuries last October after being attacked during a robbery in a parking lot near Bachman Lake. His assailants, who remain at large, left Mr. Meadows unable to walk or communicate and in need of more than $1.5 million in medical care and rehabilitation.

Paul & Edie did together a perfect opener: the Conway Twitty-Loretta Lynn classic "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly." Later Paul Simon played acoustically "Bridge Over Troubled Water", “Slip Slidin' Away," "Me and Julio Down by the School Yard," "The Boxer" “Mrs. Robinson” and "Wartime Prayers," after that Edie with The New Bohemians played 10 songs.
